Can you believe that another year has already gone by, we are in the eleventh inning stretch and how many goals have you completed from the beginning of the year? I know you have a good reason as to why you could not complete those goals?
Is there any reason why you could not complete or finish those goals this year and the year is not completely over yet? There is a little time left in the year to complete a goal. Or is it the same issue keeping you from completing those goals and that is because you are making excuses, excuses, and more excuses and that is it. There is no other reason as to why you could not complete those goals right?
I do not want to hear it; you stated that you were going to complete those goals and become a better person and to make life easier for you and your family. That is what you said. I’m going to be a better person. I did not say that you said that. Did not happen again why? Now look in the mirror and tell yourself why you could not complete one goal.
Okay, you tell me why you could not complete your goals this time? Got too busy with work. Your children were making your life more hectic than you thought this year. You had other priorities that were more important, so you put off your goals. Okay, stop right there, I’ve heard all of those excuses before.
Remember you said the same thing two years ago and now you are repeating those same excuses all over again. Let’s get real with ourselves. What is the real problem or issue that keeps you from completing one measly goal? I’m just saying, maybe the goal is not so measly and it’s a gigantic goal you are pursuing. You know what I’m trying my best to give you an out as to why you could not complete that goal. So, let me asked you again, for real this time, you could not complete just one goal this year?
Okay, let’s do this define what an excuse is so I won’t accuse you of anything that is not right or correct. An excuse is;
1. attempt to lessen the blame attaching to (a fault or offense); seek to defend or justify.
2. release (someone) from a duty or requirement.
3. a reason or explanation put forward to defend or justify a fault or offense
4. to say that (someone) is not required to do something
Those four reasons as to what an excuse is and they are not my words as to what an excuse is or are. An excuse is someone trying to lessen the blame or fault as to what they did or did not do because they were negligent in their duty to do something. That something is whatever you have committed to doing. You made a promise and you did not finish or come through on your part to finish the job.
But there are other reasons as to why we make excuses;
You do not know what we are doing. We make an excuse because we are ill prepared for the work or job we told people that we are able to complete or finish. So we make excuses as to why we cannot finish the job.
You are afraid to take a chance. You are afraid to take a chance because you may fail to complete or finish or not attain the goal. Being afraid is something everyone has if they do not know what they are doing.
If you have a well thought out plan, your plan decreases your failure rate. Having some fear of failure is good because it should motivate you. Being afraid to fail is good sometimes.
You are not prepared. Not being prepared is what the first two items talks about, not knowing what you are doing, being afraid to take a chance. They mention look and examine the tasked you have committed to. Determine what is needed to complete the job and then set up a prepared plan and follow through with your plan. There is only two things I know that is almost guaranteed to occur in your life and that is death and paying taxes, everything is a guess or a chance. So being prepared lessens your failure or fear factor.
Just being lazy. You know sometimes, you are just not into whatever the task may be and you will sit there and make excuses as to why you are not going to finish the goal. Sometimes people over promises as to what they will do and then they will under deliver as to what they have done. Evaluate your tasks or goals, before you state that you may do something. Sometimes people bit off more than they can really commit to.
You are not motivated. Motivation is probably the biggest reason people who will and those who won't do something. You set goals and are happy when you choose those goals. You want to feel good about yourself, but there has to be something in that goal that will motivate you to achieve. If there is no reward or payoff, in the end, most people will not be motivated to do anything. They will just quit and be done with the whole matter of making a goal. So make sure there is a reward or payoff at the end of the tunnel.
When I was growing up and playing high school football, my football coach had and explanation as to what he thought an excuse was and is. He stated that; “an excuse is like a’’holes, because everyone got one”. Before we make a goal know what you are doing, don’t be afraid to take a chance, be prepared, don’t be lazy. Provide yourself a reward at the end of the goal to motivate yourself. Let’s leave the excuse in the rear view mirror behind us and look forward always.
