Sleep

Ah sleep after a long day of work or play and your body is tired from your mental or physical activity you just want to get some sleep or rest to recover. Sleep is all you could think about what a great activity or whether no activity at all because it’s sleep.  People have different feelings regarding sleep, some think that you need eight hours of sleep and then there are others who believe that a good four to six hours of sleep is enough and you should be well rested to push forward throughout another day or night of activity.

First, let us define what is sleep? How much sleep does the body need?  What are the different types of sleep does the body goes through when you are trying to sleep? Sleep is when your body, mind, and soul for a period of time relaxes must of its muscles, with your eyes closed and your consciousness is somewhat in no animation. You are motionless for a period of hours.

How much sleep does the body need to function at its pristine level for any work can be accomplished? The right amount of sleep for each individual can be a tricky proposition because each and every one of us is built different physically.  So of us believe that they only need 4 to 6 hours sleep per night.  Then there are others who believe that they need 8 hours or more to be ready for a day’s work. Is there any right or wrong as to how much sleep one person determines for himself or herself?  There are companies who determine how much sleep we should get and they separate how many hours by the age of the person.

People always say that I have to get more sleep, but we never do, because we think that we are going to miss something exciting if we are sleeping. What about sleep that makes it very important activity to take advantage of?  There are five different levels of sleep and which sleep should we all take.  The National Sleep Foundation @ (sleepfoundation.org) gives their recommendations regarding how much sleep each age group should have on a given night and they are as follows;

  • 1. Sleep range widened by one hour to 11-14 hours (previously it was 12-14)

  • 2. Preschoolers (3-5): Sleep range widened by one hour to 10-13 hours (previously it was 11-13)

  • 3. School-age children (6-13): Sleep range widened by one hour to 9-11 hours (previously it was 10-11)

  • 4. Teenagers (14-17): Sleep range widened by one hour to 8-10 hours (previously it was 8.5-9.5)

  • 5. Younger adults (18-25): Sleep range is 7-9 hours (new age category)

  • 6. Adults (26-64): Sleep range did not change and remains 7-9 hours

  • 7. Older adults (65+): Sleep range is 7-8 hours (new age category)

These are the recommendations that this organization stresses, but is this a cure-all or a total panacea for everyone who sleeps less or for others who sleep more?  These are guidelines that at least give you a framework to work with.  If your sleeping habits are causing you problems because you are sleeping too long or if on the other hand, you are not getting enough sleep, then you need to change your sleeping habits or conditions.

Sleep is part of the holistic approach of keeping your body healthy because not enough sleep does have an effect on how your body functions. Lack of sleep can lead to you having health issues such as high blood pressure, heart disease and the possibility of you having a devastating stroke.  There was a study completed by Harvard University Medical School that showed that one night of not getting enough sleep can cause you to have elevated blood pressures throughout the day.

Driving a vehicle while you are suffering from lack of sleep, you are basically sleep driving and you are risks to other drivers on the highway. Your reaction time is much slower and you have become a hazard on the road. Lack of sleep is like being a drunk driver.

Lack of sleep is the number cause of accidents while people are working on their jobs. Not being alert and your reaction time is diminished and you have become a hazard to your co-workers.

Lack of sleep will have an effect on your relationship with the opposite sex because you will be tired to participate in extracurricular activity.  Not getting enough sleep affects your libido and you will have decreased interest in having sex with your partner. That is not good at all for your relationship.

Lack of sleep at work you will be less productive and this will have an effect on your ability to do your job or to keep your employment.  Most companies are already complaining that their workers are less productive than other workers from other countries.

Lack of sleep also has an effect on your looks, your skins looks, jaundiced and you have puffy eyes, fine lines, and dark circles start or begin forming under your eyes.  When you do not get enough sleep you are sleep walking think that you are awake. You make more mistakes, take unnecessary risks; your movements are very slow and sluggish.

As you can see sleep does play an important role in all of our lives, whether you are getting enough or not getting enough sleep be careful. There is a saying that you can sleep when you are dead.
